The Buffalo Bills triumphed over the New York Jets 23-20 on Monday night in East Rutherford, New Jersey, overcoming a spectacular Hail Mary touchdown from Aaron Rodgers just before halftime. The victory allowed the Bills to snap a two-game losing streak, improving their record to 4-2 and solidifying their lead in the AFC East.
In a game marked by penalties, Buffalo kicker Tyler Bass delivered a crucial 22-yard field goal with just under four minutes remaining. Cornerback Taron Johnson then intercepted a pass from Rodgers in the closing minutes, sealing the win for the Bills.
Quarterback Josh Allen was a standout performer, completing 19 of 25 passes for 215 yards and throwing two touchdown passes. He also scored on the ground in the first quarter. With this performance, Allen recorded the 21st game of his career with multiple passing touchdowns and at least one rushing score, placing him just one behind Cam Newton for the most in NFL history.
“The first half was very good, but we need to maintain that momentum in the second half,” Allen reflected post-game. “There’s a lot to learn from tonight, especially with the penalties, but it was a team win.”
Second-year running back Ray Davis stepped up in place of the injured James Cook, rushing 20 times for 97 yards and adding 55 yards receiving.
This game marked the Jets’ first outing since parting ways with head coach Robert Saleh. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich took over as interim coach, while offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was demoted from play-calling duties. The changes seemed to have an immediate impact, as New York quickly took a 10-7 lead after their first two possessions, scoring a field goal and a touchdown.
However, the Bills responded effectively. Allen connected with Mack Hollins and Dawson Knox for touchdowns, swinging momentum back in Buffalo’s favor. Just before halftime, with the Bills poised to lead 20-10, Rodgers unleashed a remarkable Hail Mary from near midfield, finding Allen Lazard in the end zone for a stunning 52-yard touchdown. This marked Rodgers’ fourth career Hail Mary, extending his record for the most in NFL history.
The remarkable play garnered praise across social media, with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes marveling at Rodgers’ skill and NBA star LeBron James echoing the sentiment.
Despite an explosive first half, scoring stalled in the second half, with the Jets struggling to capitalize on their chances. Kicker Greg Zuerlein had an off night, missing two potential go-ahead field goals, which contributed to the Jets’ third consecutive loss, dropping them to 2-4.
The Bills will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to host the Tennessee Titans next Sunday.
