Brian Matusz, a former MLB pitcher and first-round draft pick by the Baltimore Orioles, has died at the age of 37. The cause of death has not been disclosed. Matusz, a left-handed pitcher, was known for his talent on the mound and his dedication to both baseball and the community.
A Colorado native, Matusz made his mark at the University of San Diego, where he was named the 2008 West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year. That same year, the Baltimore Orioles selected him with the fourth overall pick in the MLB Draft. He quickly rose through the minor league system, making his major league debut on August 4, 2009, with a strong five-inning performance against the Detroit Tigers.
In 2010, Matusz had a breakout season, starting a career-high 32 games and finishing fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting. Although initially a starter, he transitioned to the bullpen in 2012, becoming a key reliever for the Orioles in the following years. From 2013 to 2015, Matusz appeared in at least 58 games each season, maintaining consistent success with an ERA of 3.53 or lower.
Matusz made his final MLB appearance in 2016 with the Chicago Cubs during their championship-winning season. He continued his baseball career in the minor leagues, in Mexico, and with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League before retiring from professional baseball.
The Baltimore Orioles shared a heartfelt tribute, describing Matusz as a cherished teammate and a positive presence in the clubhouse. “He dedicated his time to connecting with fans, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face,” the team wrote in their statement.
Matusz leaves behind a legacy of excellence on the field and kindness off the field. His contributions to baseball and his community will be remembered by fans, teammates, and loved ones alike.
