Brush fires in Salem and other parts of northeastern Massachusetts continue to burn, with smoke detected as far south as Boston. Approximately 130 acres have been affected since the fires started on Saturday, coinciding with an influx of tourists visiting Salem for Halloween festivities. While the fires have not impacted the celebrations, the smoke from the North Shore is noticeable miles away.

The National Weather Service in Boston alerted residents about the smoke, asking if they were experiencing the odor in southern New England. They explained that a surface inversion is trapping the smoke close to the ground but expect conditions to improve later in the morning. The agency also warned that recent dry weather and extremely dry ground could create favorable conditions for further wildfires.

Local fire departments, including those in Cambridge and Boston, have responded to numerous reports of smoke. These cities are approximately 20 miles south of Salem, and residents have been urged to remain vigilant. Fire officials have been actively monitoring the situation and addressing community concerns.

Salem Fire Chief Alan Dionne emphasized the difficulties in extinguishing the flames due to the challenging terrain between Salem, Peabody, and Lynn. The area is rocky and secluded, complicating access for firefighting efforts. Local and state agencies have been employing helicopters and drones to assess the most heavily burned areas and target their efforts effectively.

Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries or damage to homes or businesses as a result of the fires. However, similar incidents are also occurring in Middleton, located about 10 miles northwest of Salem. Emergency alerts have indicated that controlling these fires will require extensive cooperation among multiple agencies.

In addition to the Salem fires, brush fires have been reported as far south as Rehoboth. One firefighter was hospitalized due to heat-related issues but is expected to recover. As crews continue to work tirelessly to manage the ongoing fires, the situation remains dynamic and closely monitored by local authorities.
