Biden Extends Temporary Protected Status for 900,000 Immigrants from Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine, and Sudan

President Joe Biden has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 900,000 immigrants from Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine, and Sudan, allowing them to legally remain and work in the United States for an additional 18 months.

This extension affects about 600,000 Venezuelans and over 230,000 Salvadorans, among others, who have been residing in the U.S. under TPS due to unsafe conditions in their home countries.

The decision comes shortly before President-elect Donald Trump is set to take office, with plans to enforce stricter immigration policies. While the extension provides temporary relief, the future of TPS under the incoming administration remains uncertain.

TPS offers legal work authorization but does not provide a pathway to citizenship. Advocates continue to push for more permanent solutions for those who have built lives in the U.S. under this program.
