Bath & Body Works has discontinued a winter-themed candle named "Snowed In" after social media users compared its design to a Ku Klux Klan hood. The candle featured a stylized paper snowflake, which many commenters found reminiscent of the KKK’s infamous hoods and robes, symbols of one of America's oldest hate groups.
In response to the backlash, Bath & Body Works removed the candle from its website and stores, clarifying that the design was unintentional. A company spokesperson stated, "At Bath and Body Works, we are committed to listening to our teams and customers and addressing any mistakes we make, even unintentional ones." They also expressed apologies for any offense caused.
The controversy sparked creative reactions online, with some Reddit users dubbing the candle a "klandle" or "Klan Krismas Kandle." Following the uproar, customers reported that their orders for the candle had been canceled. Despite its removal from retail, the candle has appeared for sale on eBay, with one listing priced at $350.
Bath & Body Works, known for its extensive line of candles, relies heavily on holiday scents, which contribute nearly 40% to its annual sales.
