There’s an unwritten rule in football: ā€œNever let them see the backup.ā€

While Texas is unlikely to bench starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, who missed part of the Longhorns’ commanding win over UTSA due to an abdominal strain, Arch Manning gave a thrilling preview of what’s to come for Texas football.

Ewers’ injury is expected to be a minor one, just a pulled muscle, so he’s likely to return soon. But Manning took full advantage of his opportunity, making an impressive debut. Though it was a brief appearance, Manning's performance in Steve Sarkisian’s offense hinted at a bright future. He looked every bit like a potential Heisman contender and an NFL star in the making.

Manning’s entrance was nothing short of spectacular. His first three plays included a touchdown pass, a handoff, and a 67-yard touchdown run that wowed fans and went viral. It’s rare to see a Manning move like that.

When a starting quarterback goes down, it usually creates a wave of concern, especially with Ewers leading Texas as the No. 2 team in the nation with National Championship dreams. But Manning, who’s arguably the most high-profile backup in recent memory, proved he’s more than capable of holding the fort.

The Longhorns didn’t just beat UTSA—they overwhelmed them. Manning threw for 223 yards and four touchdowns, completing 75% of his passes, while Ewers had 185 yards and two touchdowns before his injury.

Next up for Texas are LA-Monroe and Mississippi State, giving Ewers some time to rest if needed. With a tough schedule ahead, including games against No. 15 Oklahoma and Georgia, having Ewers fully healthy will be key.

Ewers is set to enter the NFL Draft after this season as a top prospect, but the excitement surrounding Manning hints at a promising future for Texas football. With many games still to be played, the Longhorns' prospects look incredibly bright.
