Adidas has officially settled its legal dispute with Kanye West, which arose from the rapper's antisemitic comments in 2022 that ended their Yeezy collaboration. Following West's remarks, Adidas halted the Yeezy collection and began liquidating its stock at wholesale prices. Recently, the company announced that all legal matters between them have been resolved, marking a significant shift from the tensions of the past.
During a conference call, Adidas CEO Bjorn Gulden stated that there are no outstanding issues and that no financial exchanges will occur between the two parties. He emphasized that both sides agreed it was unnecessary to continue the conflict, noting, “The drama belongs to the past.” This resolution highlights a mutual desire to move forward from the controversy.
Gulden further explained that legal disputes involve negotiations and considerations, but the situation is now fully resolved. “No one owes anything to anybody anymore,” he asserted, reflecting the closure of their partnership. This development comes after significant public fallout from West’s statements, which Adidas condemned at the time as "unacceptable, hateful, and dangerous."
Despite the partnership's end, Adidas still possesses about €1.2 billion (£840 million) worth of Yeezy inventory. The company plans to sell these products in batches and will donate the proceeds to various NGOs, including its newly established anti-discrimination foundation. The final Yeezy stock is expected to be sold by the end of 2024.
The decision to settle stands in stark contrast to the strong stance Adidas took in 2022. At that time, the brand emphasized its commitment to diversity and inclusion, denouncing West's comments and actions. This shift in approach suggests a strategic pivot for the company as it seeks to put the controversy behind it.
West's comments led to significant repercussions, including bans from social media platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). Despite the fallout, demand for Yeezy products remained robust, with many sneakers achieving high resale values. West's ongoing struggles with mental health, including his bipolar disorder, continue to influence both his personal and professional life as he navigates the aftermath of his actions and separation from Kim Kardashian.
