Election Day Overview

On November 5, American voters will head to the polls to select the next president, with the race heating up between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. The close nature of this contest raises the likelihood that results may take longer to be announced than in past elections, creating significant anticipation.

Potential Delays in Results

Historically, election outcomes have often been declared on the night of the election or shortly thereafter. However, the tight margins in key battleground states this year could result in media outlets withholding projections until votes are fully counted. In states like Pennsylvania, where a margin of less than half a percentage point could trigger a recount, delays are a real possibility.

Legal Challenges and Disruptions

Adding to the uncertainty, there are over 100 pre-election lawsuits filed by Republicans concerning voter eligibility and other issues, which could further complicate the election process. Any disruptions at polling locations on election day may also lead to extended timelines for determining results.

Key Swing States to Watch

The election is expected to hinge on outcomes in seven pivotal swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Polls in these states will close at varying times, with the first closures at 6:00 PM EST and the last at 1:00 AM EST the following morning.

Vote Counting Procedures

Vote counting will generally prioritize ballots cast on election day, followed by early and mail-in ballots. Local election officials will conduct the canvassing process, which involves thorough verification of each ballot to ensure accuracy and integrity in the counting process.

Challenges to Certification

Once the votes are counted, the results must be certified at both local and state levels. This process will culminate in the selection of electors for the Electoral College, who will cast their votes on December 17. Despite reforms aimed at reducing challenges to certified results, potential attempts to delay the 2024 certification could still arise, particularly given the contentious atmosphere surrounding the election.

Looking Ahead to Inauguration Day

The president-elect will be inaugurated on January 20, 2025, marking the 60th presidential inauguration in U.S. history. The ceremony will include the new president taking the oath of office and delivering an inaugural address, setting the stage for the next chapter in American governance.
